Fuchsiawedstrijd 2002 - 'President George Bartlett'
Op de mooie zonnige avond van 2 augustus was het zover:
De keuring van de 'President George Bartlett'-planten die op de voorjaarsvergadering als kleine stekken aan de aanwezigen waren uitgereikt.
Meestal wordt daarmee gewacht tot de najaarsvergadering, maar aangezien die altijd pas in oktober plaats heeft, is dit niet de meest ideale tijd om te zien wie de mooiste fuchsia heeft gekweekt.
Menige prachtige plant heeft dan z'n laatste bloempjes net laten vallen, zoals dat mij overkwam met mijn 'Orange Mirage' van twee jaar geleden.
Om dit te voorkomen, werd de keuring nu tussentijds gehouden, bij één van de leden thuis in Drogeham, waar in de grote tuin ook een uitgebreid assortiment fuchsia's te zien was.
Er kwamen aardig wat belangstellenden, en er waren 10 wedstrijdplanten meegebracht. Deze werden in een schuur gezet, waar een keuringscommissie van 3 personen er een keuze uit moest maken.


Terwijl er over de planten werd "vergaderd", dronken de overige aanwezigen koffie aan een grote tuintafel, en liep men de tuin rond om de vele planten te bewonderen. Helaas hadden sommige schade opgelopen, door een windhoos die er heel kort tevoren overheen was geraasd.


Na ruim een kwartier overleggen was de jury eruit; men mocht de schuur betreden, en daar stonden drie fuchsia's naast elkaar op de grond, mooie planten met veel bloemen.


Na een toespraakje van woordvoerder Activiteitencommissie en fuchsialore-verzamelaar Sijtse Zuidema en een paar woorden van voorzitter en veredelaar Jan de Boer werden de drie prijswinnaars gefeliciteerd met hun planten en de eerste prijs ging naar dhr. R. Winkel uit Oudebildtzijl.

Fuchsia-contest 2002 - 'President George Bartlett'

On the lovely sunny evening of the 2nd of August the time had come for the "beauty-contest" of the 'President George Bartlett'-plants that had been handed out as small rooted cuttings to the people present at the spring-meeting.
As a rule this "examination" takes place at the autumn-meeting, but as this is not earlier than the second half of october, it's not the most ideal time to see who has grown the best fuchsia.
Many beautiful plants have just dropped their last flowers when the autumn-meeting is there, like it happened to my 'Orange Mirage' two years ago.
To avoid that, this event was held between these meetings, at home with one of the members at Drogeham, where there also a large assortment of fuchsias could be seen in the big garden.
Quite a few people appeared, and there were 10 plants for the competition. These were put in a shed, where a committee of three people would make a choice.


While the jury were looking at the plants, the other people present sat drinking coffee at a large gardentable, and walked around the garden to admire the variety of plants. Unfortunately, some of these had been damaged by a heavy thunderstorm raging across a few days ago.


After 15 to 20 minutes of deliberation the jury had come to a decision; we were allowed to enter the shed, and there we saw three fuchsias lined up on the ground, beautiful plants with a lot of flowers.


After a few words of the spokesman of the Committee of Activities and fuchsialore-collector Sijtse Zuidema, and of president and hybridizer Jan de Boer, the three prize-winners were congratulated with their beautiful plants. The first prize was for Mr. R. Winkel from Oudebildtzijl.
