No. 25 - Rode tulp - Red tulip
Tulipa hybr. (Liliaceae)

Tulpen zijn bolgewassen, in allerlei kleuren, vormen en maten gekweekt. De tulp is voor buitenlandse toeristen één van de symbolen van Nederland - in één adem genoemd met molens en klompen, en ook massaal geëxporteerd naar alle delen van de wereld. Het zijn voorjaarsbloemen, hoewel sommige vroeg en andere laat in 't voorjaar bloeien. En van oorsprong zijn ze helemaal niet Nederlands; de oorspronkelijke botanische tulpen komen uit het midden-oosten.
Hierboven naast de kaart een paar lage rode botanische tulpjes, en onderaan een half uitgevallen en daardoor heel goed te bekijken klassieke hoge rode Darwintulp, beide in mijn eigen tuin.

Tulips are bulbflowers, grown in all kinds of colours, shapes and sizes. For tourists the tulip is one of the national symbols of "Holland" (as they call the Netherlands as a whole, while this is only the NW part of the country), together with windmills and wooden shoes. Tulips are exported to all parts of the world. They're spring flowers, though some are early and others late in bloom. But originally they're absolutely not from the Netherlands; the botanical tulips come from the middle-east.
The picture next to the card shows a low red botanical tulip, while you see a classical Darwin-tulip in the one below - clear to see how it's been built up, because it has dropped two petals of its perianth already. Both photos were taken in my own garden.
The meaning of Dutch 'Liefdesverklaring' is: 'Declaration of love'.
