No. 3 - Zonnebloem - Sunflower
Helianthus annuus (Compositeae)
De zonnebloem kan meters hoog worden, maar meestal bereikt hij niet meer dan omstreeks 2 meter. De planten worden in hele velden gekweekt voor zonnebloemolie, maar in Nederland ziet men die niet veel, het klimaat is niet echt warm genoeg. De bloemhoofden keren zich naar de zon, en draaien mee gedurende de dag. Mogelijk dankt de plant daaraan zijn naam, maar de bloem zelf lijkt ook op een zonnetje.
De Franse naam Tournesol zegt wel degelijk iets over het meedraaien met de zon.
The Sunflower can reach several meters in height, but in most cases it doesn't grow taller than about 2 meters. The plants are cultivated in fields for sunflower-oil, but you don't see many in the Netherlands, our climate is a bit cold for them. The flower-heads turn towards the sun, and move along with the sun during the day. Possibly the name Sunflower has something to do with this, but the flower itself looks like a little sun too.
The French name Tournesol really says something about this turning-quality.
The meaning of the Dutch word "Hoogmoed" is "Haughtyness".
