Hermophrodite, actinomorphic, quinary flowers. Calyx quinate, corolla 5-sided. Stamens 5, all fused together or fused with stigma, with appendages at the foot, alternating with corolla. Styles 2, with 1 stigma. Two superior ovaries. Fruit a follicle, seeds bearing a haircrown. Plants mostly poisonous, with bitter (milky) juice.
